Can Rosemary Water Boost Hair Growth?

I first became acquainted with rosemary in my aunt’s yard, where she planted the evergreen shrubs in large garden pots, letting them soak up the abundant summer sunlight. Its intense scent transported me to distant seashores in foreign lands I knew only by name.

Primarily used in Mediterranean cuisine, rosemary is rich in health benefits, particularly in alleviating pain, inflammation, mood swings, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Rosemary-based products have also gained popularity in treating hair loss, although no studies definitively confirm their effectiveness.

Native to the Mediterranean basin, rosemary has been cultivated since ancient times. Its delicate flowers attract bees, imparting a unique flavor to honey. In fact, the first historical mention of rosemary is related to this, appearing in Virgil’s Georgics (70–19 BCE), where he describes it as pasture for bees.

A few months ago, while searching for rosemary-based hair products, I discovered a rosemary water recipe and began applying the concoction twice a day. Although no studies establish a direct link between rosemary and hair growth, some research suggests that rosemary may improve blood circulation in the scalp, reducing inflammation and creating a favorable environment for hair growth.

Rosemary water is made by steeping rosemary leaves in water, much like brewing tea:

  1. Add five cups of water to five rosemary sprigs.
  2. Boil the mixture for 15 minutes.
  3. Reduce the heat until the water turns pink or red.
  4. Strain out the twigs and leaves once the water has cooled.

After cooling, transfer the mixture into a spray bottle and store it in the fridge for no longer than two weeks.

Whether due to its nourishing properties or simply its natural composition, rosemary water makes hair feel softer, stronger, and shinier—or, in other words, healthier.

For a glowing, healthy appearance, it is essential to follow a consistent skincare and haircare routine, along with maintaining a balanced diet.
